The Science
What compostability actually means
The word 'biodegradable' is unregulated. 'Compostable' under IS/ISO 17088 is not — it requires laboratory proof.
Material Composition
ABI bags are manufactured from PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate) and PLA (polylactic acid) — both derived from renewable sources and proven to biodegrade.
Disintegration
Under industrial composting conditions (58°C, humidity >50%), the material physically breaks apart into fragments smaller than 2mm within 12 weeks.
Biodegradation
Microorganisms consume the fragments, converting them to CO₂, water, and biomass. 90% biodegradation is achieved within 180 days.
No Ecotoxicity
The resulting compost is tested to ensure no harmful residue — no heavy metals, no endocrine disruptors, no microplastics. Safe for soil application.
The regulatory position in Nepal
Nepal’s Plastic Pollution Control Act and subsequent government notifications prohibit plastic bags under 40 micron. Certified compostable bags meeting IS/ISO 17088 are explicitly exempt from these prohibitions. ABI certification documentation satisfies the compliance requirements for retailers, hospitals, and government institutions under current enforcement guidelines.
