Our Story

Built in Nepal, for Nepal’s plastic-free future.

ABI Biobags started with a straightforward observation: Nepal had a plastic problem, a regulatory framework emerging to address it, and no certified local manufacturer to fill the gap.

In 2019, the team behind ABI Biobags identified a structural gap in Nepal’s packaging market. The Government of Nepal had begun enforcing restrictions on plastic bags, and institutional buyers — supermarkets, hospitals, hotels — were urgently searching for compliant alternatives. The options available were either imported (expensive, slow, difficult to audit) or uncertified (a compliance and reputational risk).

We established ABI Biobags Udyog Pvt. Ltd. in Birtamode, Jhapa, specifically because Jhapa offered proximity to the eastern Nepal institutional market, access to a skilled manufacturing workforce, and road connectivity to both domestic distribution routes and the Indian border for raw material sourcing.

From the beginning, our commitment was not to produce bags cheaply — it was to produce bags that could be verified. The IS/ISO 17088 compostability certification was our first major investment, before we had 100 customers. We understood that institutional buyers don’t buy on price alone: they buy on documentation, on the ability to show a regulator that their packaging choice was defensible.

Today, ABI serves over 180 institutional customers across Nepal — from supermarket chains to government hospitals, FMCG brands to export-oriented manufacturers. Every product we sell carries independent certification. Every batch is traceable. That commitment has not changed since day one.

Our Mission

To manufacture and supply independently certified compostable packaging that enables Nepal’s institutions to meet their plastic compliance obligations without operational compromise — delivered on time, documented to audit standard, manufactured locally.

Our Vision

A Nepal where every institution that uses packaging has access to a locally manufactured, credibly certified compostable alternative — and where no organisation faces a compliance risk or audit failure because of unavailable documentation.

How We Operate

Our core values

Certification First

We never make an environmental claim we cannot back with independent laboratory evidence and third-party certification.

Transparent Supply

Our customers receive batch records, material data sheets, and certification references with every order — not on request, by default.

Local Commitment

We employ from Jhapa and Province No. 1, source inputs locally where available, and reinvest in the community around Birtamode.

Technical Rigor

Our production team includes polymer engineers who advise customers on material selection, not just order-takers processing requisitions.

Environmental Accountability

We track our own impact: tonnes of virgin plastic displaced, number of certified deliveries, and production waste reduction year-on-year.
